State Department issues travel warning for parts of Ecuador over kidnapping and violent crime

The U.S. Department of State released a Level 2 “Exercise Increased Caution” travel advisory for Ecuador on Monday, highlighting a sharp rise in violent crime and security threats that could affect American visitors.

Key safety concerns

Officials warned that across Ecuador, especially in areas where transnational criminal organizations operate, there has been a notable increase in murders, assaults, kidnappings, armed robberies and other crimes linked to drug trafficking. The advisory specifically cites kidnapping and extortion targeting U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.

Geographic focus of the warning

The advisory does not label the entire country as off‑limits, but it does flag several high‑traffic locations for heightened vigilance. Travelers are urged to reconsider travel to parts of Guayaquil and the coastal provinces of Manabí and Santa Elena. By contrast, popular destinations such as Quito, Cuenca and the Galápagos Islands are not listed under the “Do Not Travel” or “Reconsider Travel” categories.

Potential for civil unrest

In addition to criminal activity, the State Department noted the possibility of terrorist violence and civil unrest. Demonstrations have the potential to block roads, disrupt transportation and interrupt essential services, further complicating travel plans.

Limited assistance in remote areas

Officials cautioned that much of Ecuador’s interior is sparsely populated and remote, making it difficult for local authorities and U.S. consular officials to provide timely assistance. Travelers venturing outside major cities may experience delayed response times in the event of an emergency.

Context and recent travel advisories

This warning follows a series of recent advisories issued by the United States for other Caribbean destinations. Earlier this summer, a Level 2 advisory was renewed for the Bahamas, citing violent crime, burglaries, sexual assaults and armed robberies. In July, the State Department also updated its advisory for Turks and Caicos, warning of assaults, petty crime and scams targeting tourists.

Impact on tourism

Ecuador remains a major draw for American travelers, accounting for roughly one‑third of all international arrivals in 2025, according to the nation’s National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC). The new advisory may influence travel decisions, particularly for those planning trips to the coastal regions highlighted in the warning.

Travelers’ next steps

The State Department advises U.S. citizens to register their travel plans with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), stay informed of local conditions, avoid isolated areas, and maintain heightened awareness of personal security. For the most current information, travelers should consult the official State Department website or contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
