Stafford County, Va. – The county’s planning commission voted to recommend approval of the Accokeek Center data center, a project that could bring up to $2 billion in investment and new tax relief for local homeowners.

Project details and expected benefits

The developer, Falmouth Tech, proposes two buildings covering roughly 95,000 square feet and an on‑site electrical substation near the Rappahannock Regional Jail. In its filing, the company argues the facility will generate significant tax revenue that could ease the burden on residents.

Neighborhood opposition

Neighbors close to the proposed site expressed strong reservations. “The pollution just stinks,” said resident Emily Nivins, who purchased her home only months ago. “We just heard about this… it just stinks.” Another local, David Adedayo, noted a rise in home listings, saying, “People are selling their homes. If you come here, you are already seeing a lot of homes with for sale… some are just moving to a better place.” Some residents also pointed to existing data centers that already generate noise in the area.

County officials weigh in

While the commission’s recommendation moves the project forward, several county commissioners raised questions about setbacks, environmental impact and the adequacy of the proposed mitigation measures. The final decision now rests with the Stafford County Board of Supervisors, which will consider the commission’s recommendation at its next meeting.
