The Downtown Partnership is creating a larger plaza area for small business, restaurant, and bar owners to utilize on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg. This project is part of a larger effort to make the block between 2nd and 3rd Street more walkable, according to the Downtown Partnership’s CEO Jason Mathis.
Project Details
The project comes at a cost, as the widening of the sidewalks would remove parking spaces. However, Mathis believes that the benefits outweigh the costs, citing the increased walkability and safety of the area. The second phase of the project would focus on the north side of the street, with plans to complete landscaping work between the sidewalk and street.
Business owners, such as Ryan Griffin of the Mandarin Hide cocktail bar, have expressed support for the project. Griffin believes that the effort can foster a conversation about reinventing the area and make it more attractive to visitors. Mary Margaret’s Olde Irish Tavern and The Gallery owner Pete Boland also supports the project, citing the need for a safer and more controlled environment for customers and staff.
Funding and Timeline
The Downtown Partnership is currently raising private funds for the effort, with $250,000 already collected. The organization is also exploring funding options from the City of St. Petersburg, including Intown Community Redevelopment Area dollars. Mathis hopes to complete the north side of the street by the end of the year, with a improved pedestrian experience and a nicer dining area for bars and restaurants.
