Springfield resident Sultan Zahirsha, a 70‑year‑old entrepreneur who has lived in the city for more than two decades, is putting the final touches on the main sanctuary of American Momin Park, a new mosque being built in west Springfield at 1441 S. Farm Road 133. Zahirsha says his guiding principle is simple: “When you make the intention, God will help.”
From India to Springfield: A Decade‑Long Vision
Zahirsha sold his home in India to purchase the property for the mosque ten years ago. Five years after breaking ground, the project now includes a mosque, a Muslim cemetery, and plans for an Islamic school and community center. The development is being funded largely by Zahirsha’s own resources, subcontractors and a handful of volunteers. His two children, both graduates of Kickapoo High School, have completed higher education, allowing Zahirsha to devote himself full‑time to the effort.
Features Designed for Families and the Wider Community
The mosque is described as an “ultra‑modern masjid for the new generation.” It will have separate prayer spaces for men and women, while still allowing women to worship in the main sanctuary if they choose. Zahirsha emphasizes that the project is “sister‑friendly,” giving women responsibilities within the mosque and ensuring they feel welcome.
Beyond worship, the campus is intended to be a “lively place” for all residents. The word “Momin” means “believer,” and the inclusion of “park” signals a space where neighbors of any faith can gather, ask questions and share meals, especially during Ramadan and other community events.
Addressing Local Needs
Springfield currently lacks a dedicated Muslim cemetery or an Islamic school. The nearest Muslim burial options are in larger cities such as Kansas City or St. Louis. By establishing a cemetery on site, American Momin Park will provide a dignified option for local families. The future school and multipurpose center are expected to attract skilled professionals and families, contributing to the city’s economic and cultural vitality.
Community Response and Challenges
While many local Muslims welcome the project, Zahirsha notes that some members of the existing Muslim community have expressed resistance, claiming they “don’t want any progress.” He also reports occasional threatening phone calls from non‑Muslims, attributing the hostility to “tribal minded” attitudes. Nonetheless, Zahirsha remains optimistic that the new generation is more open to interfaith interaction.
Local business owner Faisal Khan, a longtime friend of Zahirsha, observes that the Muslim population in Springfield has grown since he arrived in 2003. He estimates the Islamic Center on Division Street once served about 30 families; today the community includes many new faces. Khan believes the mosque will draw entrepreneurs, doctors and other professionals, creating a “positive impact on the area as far as commerce and peace.”
Funding and Timeline
American Momin Park is organized as a nonprofit church, which means it is not required to file tax returns. Phase I—covering site infrastructure, the mosque and cemetery—is budgeted at roughly $2.8 million. As of July 2026, Zahirsha says he needs about $195,000 to complete the main building. Phase II, still in the planning stage, would add an Islamic school, a multipurpose community space and living quarters for an imam.
“I never thought I’d build a mosque myself,” Zahirsha says. “I sold my home, I came here, and now you see… $190,000 is not a big deal.” He hopes the finished mosque will become a beacon of faith, family and community for Springfield and the surrounding region.
