Springfield Cardinals’ Miguel Ugueto on Track to Break Stolen Base Record

The Springfield Cardinals are back at Route 66 Stadium, ready to face the Wichita Wind Surge in a six-game series starting on Memorial Day. The team, currently holding an 18-27 record, is developing a strong offensive identity, with speed playing a crucial role. Outfielder Miguel Ugueto is at the forefront of this strategy.

Ugueto, who joined the organization via the Rule 5 draft from the Boston Red Sox, has made a remarkable comeback after major ankle surgery in 2023. Now 23, the Venezuelan player is 17-for-19 in stolen base attempts this season. His recovery and performance are noteworthy, considering the severity of his past injury.

“When I broke my ankle, I never thought in my life that I’d run as fast as I’m running right now,” Ugueto shared with Springfield media relations. His mental resilience has been a key factor in his return to form.

Springfield bench coach Danny Black praised Ugueto’s growth in understanding game situations and base-stealing tactics. “Last year, he was excited and aggressive, but now he’s making smarter decisions,” Black noted.

Ugueto is on pace to steal around 70 bases, potentially surpassing Mike Antico’s team record of 52 steals in a season set in 2023. Antico also holds the Springfield career record with 100 steals.

Ugueto isn’t the only speedster on the team. Outfielder Travis Honeyman and shortstop Jeremy Rivas are also making significant contributions, with the Cardinals ranking third in the league for steals.

Pitching Highlights

On the mound, Jurrangelo Cijntje delivered the team’s best start of the season against Arkansas, leading to a 6-0 victory. Acquired from Seattle, Cijntje has shown promise with 53 strikeouts in 41 ⅔ innings.

In the bullpen, Mason Burns has been a reliable closer, maintaining a strong performance despite a recent setback against Arkansas.

Player Developments

Noah Mendlinger is improving at the plate, while catcher Ryan Campos has been a consistent offensive force. Meanwhile, prospect Rainiel Rodriguez is adjusting to Double-A play, preparing for his home-field debut.

Alumni Success

Former Springfield player Bryan Torres recently made his major league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals, marking a significant milestone in his career.
