Sportsman’s Fine Wines Is the Shop Serious Drinkers Find Eventually

On a Saturday morning around eleven, before the temperature climbs past bearable, the parking lot off 32nd Street and Camelback is already filling up. Sportsman’s Fine Wines & Spirits opens early by retail standards, and the regulars know it. You’ll see someone in running gear holding a bottle of Burgundy up to the light near the front window. Someone else is talking to one of the floor staff in a way that makes it clear they’ve had this conversation a dozen times before.

The shop has been in this location, tucked into the Biltmore-area strip on East Camelback Road, long enough that it’s easy to take for granted if you live nearby. That would be a mistake. Sportsman’s carries somewhere north of 7,000 bottles at any given time, with serious depth in California, France, Italy, and Spain. The selection isn’t padded with product to hit a volume number — somebody has made real choices here. That’s apparent the moment you start walking the aisles.

What separates it from most of Phoenix’s wine retail isn’t the square footage or the temperature-controlled storage, though both are worth noting. It’s the staff. These are people who have opinions, will defend them, and will also tell you when you’re wrong in a way that doesn’t make you feel stupid. Ask for a Rhône Valley red under forty dollars and expect a recommendation, not a shrug and a gesture toward a shelf. The shop runs a wine club that moves through regions with some intentionality, and if you sign up, the picks tend to reflect what the buyers actually find interesting rather than what a distributor is trying to move.

Spirits get real shelf space here too. The whiskey section — bourbon, Scotch, Japanese, and Irish — is extensive without being chaotic. There’s a good natural wine section that doesn’t feel like a performance, and the sparkling selection covers more ground than most places that aren’t dedicated bubbles shops. Prices run the range from under fifteen to several hundred, and the staff won’t steer you toward the expensive end unless you’ve indicated that’s where you want to go.

The shop hosts periodic tastings, usually on weekend afternoons, that are low-key and genuinely educational. These aren’t events designed to move inventory through novelty — the pours are deliberate, the conversation is real, and you usually leave knowing something you didn’t before. Check the website or call ahead; they don’t always make a lot of noise about upcoming events.

Parking is easy, the shop is walkable from the Biltmore Fashion Park area, and the hours are reasonable — typically open by ten or eleven daily. For a straight-up bottle purchase, expect to spend fifteen to thirty dollars for an everyday wine that’s actually been vetted. If you’re looking for something to cellar or to bring somewhere it’ll be noticed, the staff will have thoughts on that too, and they’ll be worth hearing.

Phoenix has no shortage of places to buy wine. Sportsman’s is where you end up when you stop wanting to guess.
