Bicycle Sundays and Baklava at Schenley’s Flagstaff Hill

My neighbor calls Flagstaff Hill “the place where Pittsburgh relaxes without trying.” That’s about right. On a Sunday afternoon in late September, I walked up from the Schenley Park Visitor Center parking lot with a blanket under my arm and realized I hadn’t been up there since summer, which was a mistake I’m not making again.

Flagstaff Hill is a broad, open grass slope on the eastern edge of Schenley Park, overlooking a natural bowl that the city uses as an outdoor amphitheater. The Pittsburgh Citiparks Summer Concert Series fills that bowl from June through August — free shows, mostly, with everything from jazz to Motown cover bands. But the hill itself is the real draw, because it asks nothing of you. No entrance fee, no reservation, no timed entry. You show up, find a patch of grass, and sit.

I got there around noon. The hill was already claimed in spots — a few families with kids running in figure-eights, a couple of grad students with laptops they clearly weren’t using, a man asleep under a wide hat. I set up near the crest where the view opens across the treetops toward Oakland. On a clear day you can see the Cathedral of Learning poking above the canopy. That view alone would justify the walk up.

What I didn’t expect was the food cart situation. A vendor near the lower path was selling baklava and spanakopita out of a small setup — good baklava, the kind that leaves your fingers sticky in a way that feels earned. I ate two pieces standing up and bought a third for the walk back. Total damage: about six dollars. There’s usually a coffee cart somewhere on the loop path too, though the selection is basic and the cups are small. Plan accordingly.

If you go on a Sunday between May and October, there’s a decent chance you’ll hit Schenley Park’s designated car-free hours, when the main road through the park closes to vehicle traffic and fills up with cyclists, roller skaters, and people who clearly bought new inline skates and are figuring it out. It makes the whole area feel temporarily reclaimed, which is the right word for it — this is a park built in 1889 and sometimes it feels like the city forgot to commodify it.

The hill itself has no amenities to speak of. There’s a restroom facility down near the tennis courts, a short walk away. Shade is limited at the summit, so in July you’ll want to either arrive early or bring an umbrella you don’t mind looking slightly ridiculous with. Fall is when the place earns a second look — the trees on the far slope go amber and rust, and the afternoon light sits on the grass at an angle that makes everything look like it was art-directed.

Admission is free. Parking on Schenley Drive can be tight on weekends, but the lot near the visitor center usually has space if you arrive before noon. The 61 buses run nearby if you’re coming from Oakland or Squirrel Hill, and the walk through the park from the Phipps side is worth doing at least once.

Pittsburgh has better-known parks and flashier attractions. Flagstaff Hill isn’t trying to compete with any of them. It’s just a good hill, with a good view, and on the right afternoon it’s exactly where you want to be.
