In Spokane, Washington, Urbanna Spa and Salon is closing its doors after 17 years in business, citing increasing crime and safety concerns. Owner Linda Biel shared the emotional news with clients, expressing heartbreak over the decision. The spa, located at Division Street and First Avenue, has been a staple in the community for a decade.
Biel has filed a lawsuit against the City of Spokane and Catholic Charities Eastern Washington, claiming that the city’s support for local housing projects and insufficient enforcement of nuisance laws have contributed to the rise in crime, negatively impacting her business. Although a federal court dismissed the lawsuit in May, stating that the safety issues were a generalized danger affecting the entire neighborhood, the case will now proceed in Spokane County Superior Court.
Incidents like a man exposing himself at the spa’s entrance have heightened concerns. Neighboring businesses have also reported similar disturbances, including property damage and erratic behavior, which have deterred customers. A representative from Magers LLC, a family business owning a nearby building for 80 years, noted that several tenants have left due to these issues.
Catholic Charities Eastern Washington, while unable to comment on ongoing litigation, expressed confidence that the closure of Urbanna Spa is not linked to their property or residents. The City of Spokane has also refrained from commenting due to the active lawsuit.
Biel hopes to raise awareness among city officials and Catholic Charities about the situation, describing it as a disgrace. Urbanna Spa and Salon is set to close permanently on July 25.
