Spider‑Man leads box office while Nolan’s The Odyssey hits $1.4 billion worldwide

Spider‑Man: Brand New Day held the No. 1 spot at the U.S. and Canadian box office for a fourth consecutive weekend, adding $39 million from 4,006 theaters, according to studio estimates released Sunday. The superhero sequel now totals over $854.9 million domestically and is on track to overtake Avengers: Endgame as the second‑highest‑grossing domestic release of all time, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Christopher Nolan’s record‑setting run

Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, secured third place with a $19.5 million haul in its sixth weekend, bringing its North American total to just under $539.1 million. The movie also surpassed the previous Nolan benchmark set by The Dark Knight, becoming the highest‑grossing R‑rated film in history. Internationally, The Odyssey added $68 million, driven largely by strong performances in China and Korea, pushing its worldwide total to $1.4 billion.

Other notable performers

Blumhouse’s Insidious: Out of the Further earned $25.3 million, making it the second‑biggest earner of the weekend. The sixth entry in the franchise, produced on an $18 million budget, also generated $35 million overseas.

Jason Statham’s action thriller Mutiny opened in sixth place with $7.5 million from 2,703 locations, despite a brief technical glitch that made the film temporarily available for free on Prime Video. The comedy Spa Weekend, featuring Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau, earned $3.1 million, with women comprising about 84 % of its opening‑weekend audience.

Other releases included The Magic Faraway Tree ($1.4 million), the 25th‑anniversary re‑release of The Fast and the Furious ($3.1 million), and the documentary‑style film Tony, which brought in $5 million.

Summer box‑office outlook

The summer season, which runs through Labor Day, has generated an estimated $4.4 billion in ticket sales in North America, placing it among the top four highest‑grossing summers on record. Industry analysts say the variety of new releases and the return of a robust production pipeline after the 2023 Hollywood strikes are contributing to the strong performance.

“We’re in the home stretch of what may become a historic summer for the box office,” said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak. “Studios will try to replicate this momentum.” Cinema United president Michael O’Leary added that the enthusiasm of moviegoers is palpable, noting a renewed energy in theaters that had been missing in recent years.
