Speaker Johnson Sends House Home Early, Delaying Impeachment Vote on Defense Secretary Hegseth

Washington — In a decisive move ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Wednesday that the chamber will adjourn early, sending members home for a seven‑week campaign recess. The early departure also postpones a pending impeachment vote against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Why the early exit matters

Republicans had originally planned to stay in session through Thursday, wrapping up a major Russia sanctions bill before breaking for the campaign break. Johnson said the decision reflects a responsibility to “go home to their districts and make the case to the American people” on the issues that matter most to families and communities.

Impeachment resolution put on hold

Rep. Thomas Massie, an outspoken conservative from Kentucky, introduced a 34‑page resolution seeking to impeach Secretary Hegseth over his handling of the U.S. war with Iran and alleged actions in Venezuela. The resolution triggered a procedural clock that would have forced House leaders to bring the matter to the floor within days.

Johnson dismissed the effort as a “publicity stunt” and stressed that the House will not be “playing games with national security” by rushing to a vote. “It will be tabled, and we will address it when we return after the election,” he said.

Attorney General defends the secretary

Attorney General Todd Blanche, speaking from the White House Rose Garden, defended Hegseth, stating the secretary “follows the law” and that the Department of Justice is actively ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Blanche called Hegseth’s performance “phenomenal” and emphasized that the secretary does not act unilaterally.

Political context

The move comes as House Republicans face mounting pressure on a range of contentious issues, from artificial‑intelligence regulation to tariff policy. By ending the session early, GOP leaders aim to give their members time to connect with voters, reinforce traditional family values, and present a united front on national security and economic priorities.

Lawmakers are expected to reconvene in Washington after the November elections, when the new congressional makeup will be clear.
