While wildfires raged in Spain, the staff at Safari Madrid stayed behind to tend to the animals, herding them into air-conditioned indoor concrete enclosures to keep them safe.

Regional Effort to Save Animals

In San Martin de Valdeiglesias, a bullring was converted into a makeshift shelter for horses, ponies, donkeys, goats, cats, and dogs. The Spanish Civil Guard also helped evacuate animals from farms and sanctuaries.

Safari Madrid took in evacuees from the Kuna Iberica wildlife center, including a Eurasian lynx, Iberian wolf, and four vultures. The park’s staff worked to keep the animals safe, hosing down surrounding areas to keep the flames at bay.

Thanks to the efforts of the staff and local authorities, all the animals were saved, although some got a little stir-crazy from being kept indoors for an extended period.
