SpaceX announced Tuesday that it will build a massive, $100 billion spaceport in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. The company calls the development “Starbase Louisiana,” a self‑sustaining launch complex that will host its Starship rocket for thousands of flights each year.
Local impact and timeline
Construction is slated to begin by the end of next year on a 125,000‑acre site near the southern coast of the parish. The first launch could occur as early as 2029, according to the project’s economic‑development website. The plan includes more than a dozen launch towers capable of supporting over 30 Starship flights per day, making the site the largest launch facility on Earth.
Governor Jeff Landry, a Republican, praised the venture as a “permanent future and lasting prosperity” for Louisiana. The announcement follows SpaceX’s broader shift away from its Falcon 9 rockets toward exclusive use of Starship for most missions. The company’s vice president of launch, Kiko Dontchev, said the final Falcon 9 launch from Florida will carry Starlink satellites, after which all future Starlink missions will fly on Starship from the West Coast and eventually from the new Louisiana site.
While the Starship vehicle is still in testing and has not yet completed an orbital flight, SpaceX expects a major test flight as soon as September, which could be the first successful orbital launch of the rocket.

The project will undergo extensive environmental, wetlands, natural‑resource and launch‑related reviews. Similar reviews for SpaceX’s Texas facilities took nearly a decade, and local environmental groups have previously challenged the company’s testing activities in Texas courts.
