Southwest Airlines CEO Discusses Potential for Continued Fare Increases Amid Fuel Cost Challenges

Southwest Airlines, headquartered in Dallas, is facing the challenge of rising jet fuel costs due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has impacted fuel prices globally. At the Bernstein’s 42nd Annual Strategic Decisions Conference, Southwest CEO Bob Jordan addressed the issue, indicating that while fuel prices may eventually decrease, flight fares might not follow suit.

Impact on Local and National Travel

Jordan noted that the aviation industry, including Southwest, has experienced seven consecutive fare increases since February 1, a trend he hasn’t seen in his 38 years in the industry. Despite these increases, consumer demand remains strong, with no significant drop in bookings. This resilience suggests that further fare hikes might be necessary to offset the high fuel costs.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, airline fares have risen nearly 21% over the past year. Jordan emphasized that the current revenue environment does not fully cover the increased fuel expenses, suggesting that additional fare increases are likely.

Southwest’s Strategic Position

Southwest operates a significant portion of its flights from Dallas Love Field, controlling 18 of the 20 gates at the airport. The airline recently reported a record first-quarter operating revenue of $7.2 billion and a net income of $227 million. Despite these strong financials, the company anticipates fuel costs to remain between $4.10 and $4.15 per gallon in the second quarter of 2026.

In response to the rising fuel costs, Southwest and other major airlines, including Fort Worth-based American Airlines, have also increased checked bag fees. Jordan expressed optimism that Southwest would be able to manage these fuel cost increases through revenue adjustments, maintaining a positive outlook on the company’s ability to navigate these challenges.
