Grand Rapids‑based Southern Smoke Soul Food is expanding its Southern‑style menu with a brand‑new line of alcoholic beverages. The restaurant, located at 4023 Division Ave SW, will now serve its own craft beer, wine and spirits, including a house‑made grape wine, Riesling, red wine and sangria.
Owner’s vision for the new line
Owner Jodie Robertson told the Morning Mix that the decision to create a proprietary alcohol line grew out of a desire to offer guests a more complete dining experience. “We wanted to pair our Cajun Smothered Catfish, ribs and mac & cheese with drinks that reflect the same Southern hospitality and flavor profile,” Robertson explained.
Robertson added that the new beverages will be brewed and bottled locally, supporting Michigan’s growing craft‑drink industry while keeping costs affordable for families and regular patrons.
What’s on tap and in the bottle
The beer selection features a light, easy‑drinking lager designed to complement spicy dishes, as well as a richer amber ale for heartier fare. The wine offerings include a crisp Riesling that balances the heat of the restaurant’s Cajun spices, a smooth red wine for steak and rib lovers, and a refreshing sangria perfect for weekend brunches.
Spirits will be introduced later in the year, with plans for a Southern‑inspired bourbon‑based cocktail menu that highlights local ingredients.
Community impact
Southern Smoke Soul Food has become a staple of Grand Rapids’ dining scene, known for its authentic Southern comfort food and family‑friendly atmosphere. The addition of a house‑made alcohol line is expected to create new jobs in production, distribution and service, further strengthening the local economy.
Local suppliers and distributors have already expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that the venture aligns with Grand Rapids’ reputation as a hub for craft food and beverage entrepreneurship.
Looking ahead
Robertson says the restaurant will roll out the new drinks gradually, starting with the beer and wine selections this month and adding spirits in the fall. “Our goal is to give Grand Rapids families a place where they can enjoy great Southern food and a drink they can feel proud to support,” she said.
