South Salem Baseball Star Sawyer Nelson Eyes Major League Career

Sawyer Nelson, a graduating senior from South Salem High School, has made a name for himself in Oregon’s high school baseball scene. As a star shortstop, Nelson has set over a dozen state and school records, including the most career home runs in Oregon’s highest level of high school baseball. His remarkable performance has drawn the attention of Major League Baseball scouts, with 10 to 15 attending each of his games.

Nelson’s journey began as a freshman when he joined the Saxon varsity team, quickly becoming a key player among mostly upperclassmen. Now, as he prepares to graduate, he reflects on the pressure of being constantly observed by scouts. ‘I’m blessed to be able to go through that experience, but it’s also, I mean, somebody’s always watching what I do, and so, it’s weird, to be honest,’ Nelson shared.

Assistant baseball coach and health teacher, Patrick Frost, has been a guiding figure for Nelson, helping him navigate the pressures of being in the spotlight. ‘If any of us had to live with that pressure… the pressure builds over time,’ Frost noted. Despite the challenges, Nelson has managed to stay humble and grounded.

Community and Leadership

Beyond his athletic prowess, Nelson is known for his leadership and community involvement. He serves as a classroom aid for Frost’s younger students, where he is a well-liked role model. His involvement in Unified sports, a program that pairs volunteer students with students with disabilities, has taught him the importance of gratitude and empathy.

Nelson also spearheaded a successful fundraiser for his team, organizing a spring baseball camp for young players, which raised $2,500 for the team’s spring break trip. His coaching style, described as ‘nonchalant,’ complements Frost’s more energetic approach, creating a dynamic team environment.

This summer, Nelson will join Salem’s collegiate baseball team, the Marion Berries, before heading to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. There, he plans to pursue a degree in psychology, business, or communication while continuing his baseball career. His ultimate goal remains to be drafted into the MLB.

Coach Frost believes in Nelson’s potential, stating, ‘He’s gonna go far in life… he’s gonna make an impact, and he’s gonna do something special.’ With his talent, leadership, and dedication, Sawyer Nelson is poised for a bright future both on and off the field.
