South Loop Hosts ‘Beats & Bites’ Featuring Local Food Trucks

The South Loop’s Roosevelt Collection is bringing the community together with its ‘Beats & Bites’ event series, running Thursdays from 5-8 p.m. through July 30. This initiative features local food trucks, many of which are owned by women and minorities, alongside live music and entertainment.

Supporting Local Entrepreneurs

Susie Dressler, general manager of Roosevelt Collection, emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses and providing visibility for entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds. The event will feature four food trucks each week, parked at the north end of the plaza in front of AMC Theatres, with entertainment on the nearby rooftop.

Participating trucks include Chkn Box, Polombia, Tacobout Pilsen, Windy City Burger Social Club, and Bad Johnny’s Wood-Fired Pizza. Wagyu House by The X Pot, a mall tenant, will also join the lineup.

Challenges and Opportunities

Mike and Key Pryor, the husband-and-wife team behind Chkn Box, transitioned from a storefront to a food truck to adapt to changing business conditions. They highlight the challenges of operating in Chicago, including outdated regulations and logistical hurdles. Despite these challenges, events like ‘Beats & Bites’ offer valuable opportunities for exposure and community engagement.

DeMarcus Grady, owner of Str8up Bussin, shares similar sentiments. His food truck focuses on healthy options and caters events, allowing him to manage operational costs while expanding his reach. Grady looks forward to participating in the event to showcase his offerings to a broader audience.

Overall, ‘Beats & Bites’ aims to create connections and lasting memories within the community, providing a platform for local businesses to thrive.
