Somerset ISD loses 20 show animals after suspected dog attacks at AG barn

Somerset Independent School District in far‑southwest Bexar County faced a tragic loss early this week when at least 20 show animals – including goats, sheep and pigs – were killed inside the district’s agriculture barn. The incidents, which occurred on Friday and again on Saturday morning, have raised serious safety concerns for the Future Farmers of America (FFA) students who tend the animals as part of their curriculum.

What happened

According to the district, the first attack on Friday was unexplained; officials could not determine what caused the animals’ deaths. The second incident on Saturday appeared to involve two dogs, as an agriculture teacher observed the animals’ caretaker watching two dogs leave the barn area. The dogs are believed to have breached the perimeter fencing, though investigators are still reviewing how they accessed the interior.

Impact on students and families

The loss extends beyond the animals themselves. FFA participants have invested significant time, effort and money into raising the livestock, with one parent noting a $5,000 expense for their child’s animals. The sudden loss not only disrupts the students’ hands‑on learning experience but also threatens their ability to compete in upcoming winter and spring shows, including the San Antonio Stock Show slated for February.

Community response

In the wake of the tragedy, neighbors and community members have rallied to support the affected students. Most of the remaining animals have been relocated to the homes of local volunteers who have offered temporary shelter. Several residents have organized fundraisers and promoted a GoFundMe campaign on social media to help families purchase new livestock for future competitions.

District actions

Somerset ISD emphasized that the agriculture barn has served the school and its agricultural program for more than four decades without a similar incident. The district announced immediate steps to increase monitoring of the barn and to strengthen existing security measures, including reviewing fencing and access points to prevent future breaches.

Looking ahead

While the loss is a heartbreaking lesson for the students, district officials and community supporters view the response as a testament to the strength of local ties and the value placed on agricultural education. The district plans to continue working with families, neighbors and law‑enforcement to ensure the safety of the barn and to restore the FFA program to full operation as quickly as possible.

For families seeking assistance, the GoFundMe page remains active, and local churches and civic groups have expressed willingness to help cover the costs of new livestock. The incident underscores the importance of vigilant security for school facilities that house valuable educational resources.
