The Social Security Administration has announced the addition of 14 new medical conditions to its compassionate allowances list, which can fast-track U.S. disability benefits for individuals. This list now includes 314 conditions in total.
What are Compassionate Allowances?
Compassionate Allowances are a way for the Social Security Administration to quickly identify diseases and other medical conditions that, by definition, are so severe that they automatically qualify an individual for disability benefits. If a condition is on this list, it is considered serious enough to qualify for disability benefits, and the application is moved to the front of the line.
Since the Compassionate Allowances List was established, more than 1.2 million people have been approved for disability medical benefits through the accelerated process, according to the Social Security Administration.
The new conditions added to the list include Adenylosuccinate Lyase Deficiency – Neonatal Form and Type 1, Aicardi Syndrome, Baraitser-Winter Syndrome, and others. The full list of eligible conditions can be found on the Social Security Administration’s website.
