The SMU Mustangs are gearing up for a new football season, and veteran players are weighing in on who they think will have breakout years. Offensive lineman PJ Williams, linebacker Brandon Booker, and quarterback Kevin Jennings shared their predictions at ACC media days in Charlotte.

Offense

Williams pointed to sophomore offensive lineman Abel Hoopii and redshirt freshman Dramodd Odoms as players to watch. Odoms, a former five-star recruit, is expected to step into a larger role this season. Williams also highlighted redshirt freshman running back Dramekco Green, who will likely split reps with Cal transfer Kendrick Raphael.

Jennings expressed high expectations for wide receiver Yamir Knight, who burst onto the scene late last season and had a standout performance in the Holiday Bowl. Knight will likely be Jennings’ top target this season, filling the shoes of graduated receivers Romello Brinson and Jordan Hudson.

Defense

Williams expects safety Tyren Polley to be a leader this year, filling the shoes of departed safeties Ahmaad Moses and Isaiah Nwokobia. Polley grew into a larger role last season, finishing with 17 total tackles and two interceptions. Williams also predicts a breakout year for defensive tackle Kevin Allen, who has waited behind more veteran players for an opportunity.

Booker has his eyes on freshman defensive end Hudson Woods, who has impressed with his work ethic. Booker understands the importance of hard work, having made a similar impact as a freshman two years ago.
