Sky rout Fire 101-78 in dominant home showing at Wintrust Arena

The Chicago Sky delivered a commanding performance at Wintrust Arena on Wednesday, dismantling the Portland Fire by a final score of 101-78 to secure a convincing home victory. The 23-point margin left little doubt about which team controlled the contest from wire to wire.

Skylar Diggins led the way for Chicago, pacing all Sky scorers with 15 points while also distributing 6 assists to keep the offense humming. Her ability to both create and finish gave Portland’s defense fits throughout the evening. Azura Stevens was equally impactful on the glass, hauling in a game-high 11 rebounds to anchor Chicago’s interior presence and limit Portland’s second-chance opportunities.

For the Fire, Megan Gustafson was the lone bright spot offensively, finishing as Portland’s leading scorer with 17 points — the most by any player on either side. Carla Leite chipped in 6 assists to pace Portland’s ball movement, while Sarah Ashlee Barker led the visitors on the boards with 5 rebounds. Despite those individual contributions, Portland could never string together enough consistent offense to threaten Chicago’s lead.

The shooting numbers told the story of Portland’s struggles. The Fire connected on just 26 of 69 field goal attempts, a 38 percent clip that made it nearly impossible to keep pace with a Sky offense that was clicking on all cylinders. Portland did find some rhythm from beyond the arc, knocking down 10 of 25 three-point attempts for a 40 percent mark, and they were solid at the free throw line, converting 16 of 20 attempts for 80 percent. But those bright spots were not nearly enough to offset the overall shooting inefficiency.

Portland’s 12 total turnovers — 11 individual and 1 team — further compounded their offensive woes, gifting Chicago additional possessions throughout the game. The Fire also committed a flagrant foul during the contest, adding to the rough night on the defensive end. Portland finished with 29 total rebounds, including 8 on the offensive glass, but their inability to convert those extra opportunities into points kept them from mounting any serious comeback bid.

Chicago’s defense was suffocating, holding Portland to well below what the Fire would need to compete in a game of this magnitude. The Sky’s ability to control the pace, limit Portland’s rhythm, and capitalize on turnovers proved to be the decisive factors in pulling away for the lopsided win.

The victory was a statement performance for Chicago on its home floor, with Diggins orchestrating the offense and Stevens providing the physicality inside that the Sky needed. Portland, meanwhile, will need to address its field goal efficiency and ball security if it hopes to bounce back in its next outing. The Fire’s 12 turnovers and 38 percent shooting are areas that will demand attention heading into the next game on the schedule.

For Chicago, the dominant showing at Wintrust Arena reinforces the Sky’s standing as a formidable force at home, where the crowd and the comfort of familiar surroundings appeared to fuel another strong effort from a squad that is building momentum as the WNBA season progresses.
