San Jose State University (SJSU) has refused to disclose emails related to an investigation into allegations against volleyball coach Todd Kress. The allegations, which date back to 1998, were made by a former player who claimed Kress engaged in inappropriate behavior.

Investigation and Response

The university received a letter containing the allegations in October 2024 and conducted an investigation. However, SJSU has cited privacy exemptions and attorney-client privilege in denying a public records request for emails related to the investigation.

The former player, who has not been named, alleged that Kress forcibly threw her on a bed, pulled his pants down, and threatened to turn on the shower. She also claimed that her teammates had been drinking with Kress underage.

SJSU Athletic Director Jeff Konya responded to the allegations, stating that he would share the correspondence with the proper authorities for review. Former SJSU interim Title IX and Gender Equity Officer Peter Lim also reached out to the former player to discuss the allegations.

Despite the investigation, SJSU has not issued a public statement addressing the allegations. The university’s refusal to release records has raised questions about the handling of the investigation and the potential risks to current players.
