Sip, Stroll, and Soak It All In: Why the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens Will Stop You in Your Tracks

There are places in this world that make you slow down without asking you to. The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, tucked into the El Cid neighborhood of West Palm Beach just a few blocks from the Intracoastal Waterway, is exactly that kind of place. The moment you step through the gate, something shifts. The city noise fades. The air smells of jasmine and earth. And then you see them — enormous, rough-hewn brick sculptures rising up through a canopy of royal palms and rare cycads, looking as though they grew right out of the South Florida soil.

The gardens are the former home and studio of Ann Weaver Norton, a nationally recognized sculptor who lived and worked here from the 1950s until her death in 1982. She designed the landscape herself, planting over 2,000 specimen palms and cycads across nearly two acres of lush grounds. Walking through this place is not just an afternoon outing — it is a genuine encounter with an artist’s complete vision, preserved and lovingly maintained by the nonprofit foundation that bears her name.

The nine monumental brick sculptures are the centerpiece of the experience, and they are unlike anything else you will find in South Florida. Some stand 15 feet tall, abstract and commanding, with a raw, primal energy that feels surprisingly modern. Norton drew inspiration from Native American and pre-Columbian forms, and you can feel that ancient resonance as you move around each piece, watching how the light and shadow shift across the textured brick surfaces throughout the day. Morning visits are particularly magical, when the low golden light catches every ridge and groove.

Beyond the sculptures, the botanical collection is extraordinary in its own right. Norton assembled one of the most significant private collections of rare palms and cycads in the country, and horticulture enthusiasts come from across the state to see plants that simply do not exist in collections elsewhere. The grounds feel wild in the best possible way — not manicured to the point of sterility, but alive and layered and genuinely surprising around every bend in the path.

The historic 1920s home on the property has been restored and houses a gallery displaying Norton’s smaller-scale works, drawings, and personal archives. Stepping inside gives you a vivid sense of who she was: serious, disciplined, deeply connected to her art and her land.

Admission is modest, parking is easy, and the staff are genuinely passionate about the place. The gardens are open Wednesday through Sunday, and I would strongly recommend arriving early on a weekend morning before the heat of the day sets in. Bring a bottle of water, wear comfortable shoes, and give yourself at least 90 minutes. You will not want to rush this one.

El Cid is one of West Palm Beach’s most charming historic neighborhoods, full of Mediterranean Revival homes and quiet streets, so the walk from a nearby parking spot is a pleasure in itself. After your visit, the Intracoastal is just a short stroll away, with waterfront restaurants and a breeze that makes everything feel just right.

The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens is the kind of place locals cherish and visitors remember long after they have left. It is intimate, it is beautiful, and it tells a story about one remarkable woman who turned a patch of South Florida land into something genuinely timeless. Come see it for yourself.
