Sig Hansen of ‘Deadliest Catch’ Dismisses Retirement Rumors Amid Health Concerns

Sig Hansen, the well-known captain from the Discovery Channel’s ‘Deadliest Catch,’ has addressed recent rumors about his potential retirement. Despite experiencing a medical emergency last year, Hansen, 60, remains resolute in his decision to continue captaining the F/V Northwestern.

Family and Future Plans

In a recent interview with People, Hansen shared his thoughts on retirement, stating, “I keep hearing those rumors myself. The more I hear that, the more I kind of want to rebel and not do that.” He emphasized his desire to see his daughter, Captain Mandy Hansen, take on a larger role in the future. However, her recent focus on family life, including raising grandchildren, has delayed this transition. Hansen’s son-in-law, Clark Pederson, has been stepping up, but Hansen admits that his own ego plays a part in his reluctance to step down.

Health Challenges

During the Season 21 finale, viewers witnessed Hansen’s health scare when he was rushed to the hospital after collapsing on his vessel. Having previously suffered two heart attacks, Hansen acknowledged his unhealthy habits, including excessive caffeine consumption and smoking. His doctor advised him to reduce these habits and consider retirement. Despite this, Hansen remains committed to his work, stating, “I know time is limited, so I want to keep doing it while I can.”

Passion for the Sea

Even if Hansen eventually steps down as captain, he expressed that he could never fully retire from the sea. “I don’t think I could ever fully retire. Even if someone else was running the boat, your mind is still active,” he said. Hansen’s passion for the sea and his role in the fishing industry remain strong, as he continues to balance his health with his love for his work.

‘Deadliest Catch’ airs Fridays at 8/7c on the Discovery Channel.
