Shreveport’s Canvas & Cadence Celebrates Black Music and Civil Rights

In the heart of Shreveport, Louisiana, the Canvas & Cadence interactive visual arts experience is bringing the community together to celebrate Black Music Month. Hosted at the Uneeda Artist Lofts, this exhibit showcases the vibrant works of local artists, intertwining music with visual mediums such as painting, sculpture, and physical displays.

Art and Music as a Medium for Change

Organizers Ron Smith and Karen LaBeau have crafted an event that not only celebrates music but also highlights its role in civil rights. LaBeau expressed the importance of this connection, stating, “We wanted to be active and show things that are important because with the music, comes forms of protest, comes joy. Music is the fabric of our life and what better way than to show it on canvas and have people feel it?”

Smith added, “Most people don’t know what June represents except for Juneteenth. We have to celebrate that, but celebrate the art and the artists that actually spearheaded this. So it’s a mix of music, but we also have a mix of the music as it pertains to civil rights.”

The event not only honors the historical significance of Black music but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and justice. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the art and music, reflecting on the powerful messages conveyed through these creative expressions.

For those interested in learning more about the event or the artists involved, additional information can be found on Ron Smith’s website and social media pages, as well as Karen LaBeau’s social media platforms.
