Shreveport gardeners advised to replace drought‑killed shrubs this fall

SHREVEPORT, La. — A blistering summer of high heat and low rainfall has left many Shreveport homeowners noticing empty spaces where once‑healthy shrubs stood. Local nursery expert Jennifer McGimsey of Akin’s Nursery says the loss is usually the result of insufficient watering, not disease or pests.

Why shrubs died

“There was nothing wrong with this poor shrub. It just so happened that it did not get enough water,” McGimsey explained. She notes that extreme weather often reveals small weaknesses in home irrigation systems. Gaps in sprinkler coverage, uneven soil moisture, or areas that receive extra sun after nearby trees are cleared can cause soil to dry out quickly, leaving individual plants vulnerable during heat waves.

What homeowners should do now

McGimsey recommends a two‑step approach. First, remove any dead shrubs promptly. Leaving dead wood in place can invite pests and further stress surrounding plants. Second, decide whether to let the remaining foliage naturally fill the gap or to plant a replacement.

“Fall is the ideal time to plant,” she said. “Now is the time to do it, now that we’re past most of the stress of the summer.” The cooler temperatures and more reliable rainfall of autumn give new plantings a better chance to establish strong root systems before the next summer.

Targeting problem spots

For those who choose to replant, McGimsey advises paying special attention to the specific locations that suffered loss. She suggests a supplemental watering schedule for those vulnerable spots during August and September, even if the rest of the yard receives a normal irrigation routine. A few extra minutes of watering in the hottest part of the day can make the difference between a thriving shrub and another dead one.

Homeowners should also inspect their irrigation systems for uneven coverage. Adjusting sprinkler heads, adding drip lines, or using soaker hoses in dry pockets can help ensure consistent moisture throughout the landscape.

Long‑term landscaping resilience

Beyond immediate repairs, McGimsey encourages Shreveport residents to think about long‑term drought resilience. Selecting native or drought‑tolerant shrub varieties, mulching around plant bases, and grouping plants with similar water needs can reduce the impact of future heat spikes.

“A well‑designed garden that respects the local climate will stand up better to the next summer’s challenges,” she added.

Getting help

Homeowners who need assistance evaluating their irrigation setup or choosing appropriate replacement plants can visit Akin’s Nursery in Shreveport. The staff can provide a free site assessment and recommend shrubs that thrive in the region’s climate.

By taking action now, Shreveport gardeners can restore the beauty of their yards, protect their investments, and enjoy a healthier, more resilient landscape for years to come.
