Shreveport attorney Royal Alexander recalls Pentagon attack on 9/11 anniversary

SHREVEPORT, La. — As the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, local attorney and political analyst Royal Alexander reflected on the day he stood only a few hundred yards from the Pentagon when American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the building.

First‑hand recollection of the explosion

Alexander was in Crystal City, Va., on a congressional trip when he heard a sudden, deafening blast. “I remember hearing a loud explosion, and no one knew for a while what it was,” he said. The shockwave rippled through the area, and within minutes thousands of Pentagon workers were streaming out of the building, seeking safety in the surrounding streets.

Understanding the broader attack

Looking back, Alexander noted that investigators later determined the attacks were part of a coordinated assault on the United States. He added that the hijacked plane that later crashed in Shanksville, Pa., may originally have been headed toward the U.S. Capitol, underscoring how close the nation came to an even greater catastrophe.

Washington in the aftermath

He described Washington, D.C., in the days following the attacks as “eerily silent,” with military aircraft constantly overhead and heightened security at every corner. The city’s atmosphere, he said, reflected a nation grappling with shock and uncertainty.

Enduring unity and resilience

When asked what has stayed with him most over the past quarter‑century, Alexander pointed to the extraordinary sense of unity displayed by Americans in the aftermath. “I don’t know that our country has been more united,” he said. He expressed hope that today’s citizens will continue to embrace the spirit of togetherness and resilience that emerged during one of the country’s darkest days.

Why the memory matters for Shreveport

For residents of Shreveport and the surrounding region, Alexander’s recollection serves as a reminder that even those far from Washington felt the tremors of that tragic day. His experience underscores the importance of honoring the sacrifices of first responders, military personnel, and ordinary citizens who rallied to protect the nation.

As the nation reflects on 9/11, stories like Alexander’s help keep the memory of that day alive, reinforcing the shared values of faith, family, and liberty that continue to guide our communities.
