Several shoreline area communities in Connecticut are under a mandatory boil water order after E. coli was detected in the water supply. The affected towns include Haddam, Deep River, Essex, Chester, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Clinton, Madison, and Guilford.
According to the Connecticut Water Company, the bacteria was found during routine testing at one of their sample points in Essex. Residents are advised to boil their water for at least 60 seconds and let it cool before drinking and using it for activities such as brushing their teeth, washing dishes, and making ice.
The Connecticut Water Company has consulted with the Connecticut Department of Public Health and is conducting additional sampling at numerous locations in their delivery system. Results from these tests are expected within 24 hours.
Water tankers have been set up at the Essex and Westbrook Fire Departments, as well as the I-95 commuter lot in Madison, for those in dire need of water.
