Shine Bright Prom Gives Clients with Intellectual, Developmental Disabilities an Unforgettable Night

Emergence Health Network brought prom night to life in El Paso, Texas, hosting the Shine Bright Prom at the Marty Robbins Recreation Center for clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Noreen Jaramillo, Emergence Health Network’s Director of Communications, helped organize an event designed to give attendees a classic prom experience with music, dancing, and the chance to dress up and be celebrated. Families, staff, and volunteers filled the gym for an evening built around connection, confidence and community support.

The gym at the Marty Robbins Recreation Center was transformed with lights, decorations and a playlist set to keep people on the dance floor. Local staff worked alongside volunteers to help with gowns, corsages and hair touches so everyone felt their best. For many attendees, this event offered something they had never experienced before: a night focused on them and their joy.

Emergence Health Network tailored the Shine Bright Prom to meet a wide range of needs so that sensory issues and mobility challenges would not keep anyone from joining the fun. Activities were paced to give guests time between dances and quieter spaces were available for anyone needing a break. The thoughtful setup meant people could participate on their own terms while still enjoying the energy of a big, celebratory room.

Noreen Jaramillo described the prom as a meaningful moment for clients and families, saying the Shine Bright Prom gave clients a day of “fun, excitement and unforgettable memories” for those who never had the chance to attend a prom before. Her words echoed a simple but powerful goal: to make an inclusive, memorable night that honored each person. Staff emphasized that the focus was on dignity and celebration rather than on clinical care or programming.

Volunteers played a major role in bringing the prom to life, helping with decorations, escorting guests and offering patient, cheerful support throughout the night. Local community members and peer volunteers moved through the crowd, offering encouragement and helping guests navigate the event. Those one-on-one moments—adjusting a jacket, fixing a boutonniere, or asking a favorite song—were as important as the music and lights.

Music and dancing formed the heart of the evening, with playlist choices spanning decades to make sure everyone found a tune to move to. Staff took requests and clapped along, turning simple dances into shared celebrations that drew families onto the floor. The atmosphere balanced high energy with the kind of calm attention that made the event feel safe and joyful for all attendees.

Families described how powerful it was to see their loved ones recognized and celebrated in a public way, pointing out that prom is often a milestone many assume everyone will have. For those who had never had a prom experience, the night offered not only excitement but also a sense of inclusion many families had long hoped to see. Staff noted that these moments can boost confidence and create memories that ripple far beyond the event itself.

Planning a prom for clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities demands attention to details others might overlook, and Emergence Health Network leaned into that work. Lighting choices, sound levels, seating arrangements and volunteer training were all considered to reduce barriers. The result was a smooth-flowing evening where the logistics supported the goal of celebration rather than getting in the way of it.

As guests left the Marty Robbins Recreation Center, many held small tokens of the night—photos, corsages and the feeling of being seen. Organizers said they hoped the Shine Bright Prom would become a recurring highlight for clients and families in El Paso. The event underscored how a community willing to adapt traditions can create something truly special for people who often get overlooked.
