A Sheridan woman, Uliana Van Houten, has been sentenced to prison for embezzling money from Beacon Independence Center, a non-profit organization. At a change of plea hearing in April in Fourth Judicial District Court, Van Houten pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft and nine counts of felony forgery.
Embezzlement Details
The embezzlement occurred between September 2024 and April 2025, when Van Houten was the chief financial officer for the non-profit. She used Beacon funds to purchase a 2025 Honda CR-V and wrote checks to herself that were not approved by the organization’s president and CEO, Kelly Gooch. The total amount embezzled was over $143,000.
As part of her plea agreement, Van Houten was required to pay the full restitution amount by the time of sentencing. She will now serve time in prison for her crimes.
