Sheridan Memorial Hospital expands patient financial advocacy services

Sheridan Memorial Hospital is stepping up its support for community members facing medical expenses. Patient accounts manager Regan Palmer explained that the hospital’s Patient Financial Advocate’s Office assists residents with a range of financial questions, from understanding Medicare coverage to locating drug‑assistance programs.

How the advocates help

Patients can contact an advocate for basic insurance clarification, but the office most often sees individuals who lack coverage and encounter a sudden health crisis—such as a broken leg or an unexpected illness. In those cases, advocates work to identify payment options, connect patients with affordable prescription programs, and guide them through enrollment periods.

During open enrollment for the health‑insurance marketplace, the team helps uninsured residents sign up for plans when employer coverage is unavailable. For those approaching Medicare age, advocates assist with Part B enrollment and supplemental plan selection. Even patients who are already enrolled through an employer can receive help interpreting plan choices.

Resources offered

The office provides information on state and federal assistance programs, helps patients apply for drug‑cost reduction initiatives, and offers guidance on navigating the complex billing process. By acting as a liaison between patients, insurers and the hospital’s billing department, the advocates aim to reduce financial stress and ensure that care remains accessible.

Palmer emphasized that the service is a community resource, not a charity, and encourages anyone with questions about medical costs to reach out early, before bills become overwhelming.
