Sheridan County Opens Draft of Updated Wildfire Protection Plan for Public Comment

Sheridan County fire warden Chris Thomas announced that the county’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan has been updated for the third time since its original 2018 version. The draft, which runs roughly 300 pages, is now available on the county’s website under the Featured News section for public review and comment.

Why the plan is being revised

Thomas explained that both the natural environment and the local community have changed significantly over the past several years. “Conditions have been changing, our community has been changing,” he said on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program. The new draft reflects recent growth in residential development, shifts in vegetation patterns, and lessons learned from recent fire events in the region.

How residents can participate

The county is seeking written comments from citizens, landowners, and interested organizations. Comments can be submitted through the online portal linked on the county’s website or mailed to the fire department’s office. The comment period will remain open for 30 days, after which the feedback will be incorporated into the final version of the plan.

Funding and inter‑agency cooperation

The revision effort is being supported by a federal grant that enables coordination among rural fire departments, the county’s emergency management office, and neighboring agencies. Thomas noted that the grant helps fund outreach, mapping, and the development of mitigation projects such as fuel‑break creation and community education programs.

Key components of the draft plan

  • Risk assessment: Updated maps identify high‑risk zones based on recent fire history and current vegetation.
  • Prevention strategies: Recommendations include prescribed burns, vegetation management, and building‑code enhancements for new construction.
  • Preparedness measures: Expanded evacuation routes, community alert systems, and training for volunteer fire crews.
  • Response coordination: Clear protocols for mutual aid with neighboring counties and state agencies.
  • Recovery guidance: Steps for post‑fire rebuilding that protect families and preserve the county’s natural resources.

What this means for families and faith communities

Local families, churches, and other community groups are encouraged to review the plan, as it directly impacts safety for homes, schools, and places of worship. By participating in the comment process, residents can help ensure that the plan balances effective fire protection with respect for private property and local traditions.

Next steps

After the comment period closes, the fire warden and county commissioners will evaluate the input and finalize the plan. The completed document is expected to be adopted at the next county commission meeting, scheduled for early next year.
