Sheridan County launches Ready Set Go evacuation planning program

Sheridan County Emergency Management Coordinator Jesse Ludikhuize appeared on the local talk show Public Pulse to introduce the county’s new Ready Set Go program. The initiative is designed to streamline evacuation procedures for residents in the event of a disaster.

Collaboration among local agencies

According to Ludikhuize, the program was developed in partnership with the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Department, local police departments, fire departments, and the county fire warden. By bringing these agencies together, the county aims to create a unified response plan that is clear and accessible to the public.

Perimeter Maps provides pre‑created evacuation zones

The core of the Ready Set Go system relies on a service called Perimeter Maps, which the county is using to pre‑draw evacuation zones on detailed maps. Residents are encouraged to review these maps ahead of time so they know which zone they reside in and the routes they should take if an evacuation order is issued.

“The public always wants a map,” Ludikhuize said. “We have to describe what those zones are, and we encourage the public to look on that map and pre‑know where their zones are.” The maps are available online at www.perimetermaps.com.

How the program works for residents

Ready Set Go includes three main components: pre‑planning, mapping, and an alerting system. Residents can access information on how to create a family evacuation plan, identify the nearest shelter locations, and sign up for emergency alerts that will be sent through the county’s communication channels.

The program also outlines “stages” that will be activated during an emergency, guiding the public through the steps from initial warning to final evacuation. Ludikhuize emphasized that the goal is to reduce confusion and ensure a swift, orderly response when a disaster strikes.

Next steps and community outreach

The county plans to hold informational sessions and distribute printed materials at community centers, schools, and places of worship. These efforts are intended to reach families, seniors, and anyone who may need additional assistance preparing for an evacuation.

“We want to get the message out as best as we can,” Ludikhuize said, noting that the program’s success depends on community participation. Residents are urged to visit the Perimeter Maps website, review their evacuation zone, and consider what supplies and plans they will need in an emergency.

Why the program matters

Sheridan County, like many rural areas, faces unique challenges such as limited road networks and dispersed populations. By establishing clear evacuation zones and a coordinated alert system, the county hopes to protect lives and property while respecting the rights of families to prepare for emergencies in advance.

The Ready Set Go program reflects a broader trend of local governments adopting proactive emergency‑management strategies that involve both public agencies and the citizens they serve.
