Sheridan County Fire Warden Warns of Busy Fire Season Amid Dry Conditions

Sheridan County residents are facing an active fire season, according to Fire Warden Chris Thomas, who appeared on the local radio program Public Pulse this week. Thomas explained that a combination of a hot, dry summer and an unseasonably warm winter has left vegetation extremely dry, increasing the likelihood of wildfires across the county.

Conditions Driving the Fire Threat

“The hot dry summer coupled with the most recent unseasonably warm winter has created a busy fire season in Sheridan County,” Thomas said. He noted that the moisture deficit in grasses, brush, and timber makes it easier for sparks to ignite and harder for crews to contain flames once they start.

Response Strategy

County fire crews are adapting to the heightened risk by calling in additional heavy equipment for suppression efforts. “A lot of these fires, they can go in there with their trucks and spray the water and put the fire down. This year, they’re so dry, the fires are that much more active,” Thomas explained. When a fire cannot be extinguished quickly with standard hoses, the department is prepared to construct fire lines using bulldozers and other machinery to create a barrier that slows the spread.

Thomas emphasized the challenges firefighters face when confronting larger flames. “If we can’t catch it right away, we’re going to need equipment to put in a fire line because the fire is just, you cannot get that close to it. The flame lengths, you’ve got four or five foot flame lengths, you can’t do that with a hose,” he said.

Public Safety Measures

The fire warden urged residents to remain vigilant, especially those living near forested or brush-covered areas. He recommended clearing vegetation around homes, maintaining defensible space, and reporting any signs of smoke or fire to the county dispatch center immediately.

Thomas also reminded the public that the county’s emergency alert system is active and that residents should sign up for text or email notifications to receive timely updates during fire incidents.

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, the fire department will continue to monitor weather patterns and adjust resources as needed. Thomas assured the community that the department is working closely with state and federal agencies to ensure a coordinated response should a major wildfire develop.

“We are prepared, but we also need the community’s cooperation to keep our homes and families safe,” Thomas concluded.
