Sheridan County Election Results: New Council Members, Tax Measures Approved

Tuesday’s 2026 General Election brought several important outcomes for Sheridan County voters. At the municipal level, residents elected Terry Weitzel, Greg Luhman and Amber Horsley to the Sheridan City Council, while Jim Schellinger, Holly Jennings and Christi Haswell secured seats on the Sheridan County Commission. All county legislative candidates ran unopposed, ensuring a smooth transition for the new officials.

Tax Measures Passed

Two tax initiatives received voter approval. The fifth penny sales tax – a general‑purpose sales and use tax that adds one cent to every dollar of taxable retail sales – was renewed, providing a steady revenue stream for county services. In addition, the two‑percent lodging tax, which applies to non‑local guests staying in Sheridan County, was also approved, supporting tourism‑related projects and infrastructure.

Proposition 1 Defeated

Voters rejected Proposition 1, the Wyoming Homeowner’s Primary Residence Property Tax Exemption Initiative, leaving the existing property tax framework unchanged.

School and College Board Elections

Four individuals were elected to the Board of Trustees for Sheridan County School District Two: Ann Perkins, Chase Christensen, Michael Lansing and Peter Hawkins. Meanwhile, Don Julian, Elaine Olafson Henry and Chuck Holloway won seats on the Sheridan College Board of Trustees, shaping the future of higher education in the region.

Statewide Results

Republican Eric Barlow of Gillette won the governorship with a decisive margin over Democratic challenger Kenneth Casner and Constitution Party candidate Rebecca Bextel. In federal races, Republican Harriet Hageman retained her U.S. Senate seat, and fellow Republican Chuck Gray captured the open U.S. House seat previously held by Hageman. Republican Robert Short was elected Secretary of State, and Steve Harshman will serve as the next Superintendent of Public Instruction. All results are unofficial pending canvass later this week.

What This Means for Residents

The newly elected council members and commissioners will begin shaping local policy on issues ranging from public safety to infrastructure development. The renewal of the sales tax and lodging tax ensures continued funding for essential services and tourism initiatives, while the defeat of Proposition 1 maintains the current property tax structure, preserving revenue for schools and county operations. Voters can expect the incoming officials to work closely with state leaders to advance the community’s economic and educational priorities.
