Shelbyville Residents Upset Over Mayor’s Disparaging Remarks

In Shelbyville, Indiana, tensions are rising as residents express their dissatisfaction with Mayor Scott Furgeson’s recent comments. The controversy erupted during a city council meeting focused on the proposed multi-billion-dollar data center project. Many citizens felt insulted by the mayor’s remarks, which were caught on camera.

Community Reaction

Alan Kitson, a member of the Shelby County Citizens Against Data Centers, voiced his concerns, stating, “I think it was very detrimental and very inappropriate and disrespectful language to be used. To single anybody out and say they are not worthy of being represented or worthy of being heard, everybody is worthy to be heard on this.”

The proposed data center, which would consist of 11 buildings across 429 acres of farmland, has been a contentious issue in the community. Despite thousands of signatures opposing the project, the city council approved the proposal earlier this year.

Mayor’s Response

Following the backlash, Mayor Furgeson’s office released a statement expressing regret over the choice of words, clarifying that the comments were intended to address property maintenance rather than the character or importance of any resident. However, many in the community feel the damage has already been done.

Kendra Loller, a local resident, shared her disappointment, saying, “I think it’s just disappointing. I believe our community is so broad that a mayor saying something like that is disappointing and insensitive.”

As the debate over the data center continues, the community remains divided, with residents emphasizing the need for respectful dialogue and representation.
