Shawn Joseph Named Permanent Superintendent of Prince George’s County Schools

Shawn Joseph, who has served as interim superintendent for Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) since July 2025, has been appointed as the permanent superintendent following a nationwide search. Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy announced the decision on June 1, highlighting Joseph’s ability to connect with educators, administrators, and parents.

Joseph, who holds a doctoral degree in educational administration and policy studies from George Washington University, previously worked in the Nashville school system. He succeeds Millard House II, who resigned in June 2025 after a no-confidence vote by the Prince George’s County Education Association (PGCEA). During his interim tenure, Joseph prioritized addressing the teacher vacancy rate and managing the budget amid shrinking local revenues.

Community Concerns and Support

While Joseph’s appointment has been praised by county leaders, some residents have expressed concerns about the transparency of the selection process. The Parents LEAD Coalition, representing nearly 500 residents, petitioned PGCPS leadership in May, questioning the lack of community involvement in the decision-making process. They argued that the administration has a pattern of limited transparency, citing previous incidents related to budget decisions and community surveys.

Despite these concerns, Joseph has received strong support from the PGCEA. Dr. Donna Christy, PGCEA President, emphasized Joseph’s efforts to build a strong partnership with educators through consistent communication and shared problem-solving. Joseph’s leadership is seen as a positive step toward improving student achievement and strengthening employee relations in the school system.

Joseph’s appointment marks the culmination of three decades of leadership experience in education. He also serves as one of the co-directors of Howard University’s Urban Superintendents Academy. With his seasoned leadership and the Board’s commitment, PGCPS aims to enhance the overall educational experience for its more than 130,000 students.
