Shaw University students are facing a housing crisis after a fire shut down the Dimple Newsome dorm in February. The university has confirmed that the dorm will not reopen until next year, leaving students to scramble for alternative accommodations.

Limited Housing Options

The university has informed students that only two dorms, TOS 1 and 2, will be available for the upcoming school year, with no single or private room options due to limited capacity. Priority will be given to first and second-year students.

Tamira Little, a parent of a Shaw University student, expressed her concerns about the situation. ‘It’s devastating news because it’s his senior year,’ she said. ‘We have made arrangements for him to stay with one of his grandparents in Durham, North Carolina, but it will be a challenge for him to commute to campus.’

The university has provided students with information about off-campus housing options, including properties offering special rates and promotions for Shaw students. However, many students and parents are still worried about the lack of available housing.

University Response

The university has stated that it understands the concerns of students and their families and is committed to helping them navigate the available options. ‘Our priority is to ensure that each residence hall meets the necessary safety and operational standards and provides students with a safe, supportive, and comfortable living environment before it is returned to service,’ the university said in a statement.

Shaw University has a total of four dorms, and with Dimple Newsome and Fleming Kee closed, students are facing a difficult time finding a place to stay. The university has not provided a reopening date for Fleming Kee.
