Shanksville commemorates 25 years since Flight 93 tragedy with two solemn ceremonies

Friday, September 11, marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives across the United States. In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the Flight 93 National Memorial hosted two ceremonies to remember the heroism of the 40 passengers and crew who fought back against the hijackers on board Flight 93.

Morning observance at the Wall of Names

At 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, families, veterans, elected officials and members of the public gathered at the memorial’s Wall of Names. Officials read aloud each of the 40 names, allowing loved ones to hear the names of those who perished. The solemn moment was punctuated by the Bells of Remembrance, which rang in tribute to the fallen.

Afternoon tribute with Governor Shapiro

At 1 p.m., a second ceremony returned to the Wall of Names. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro addressed the crowd, emphasizing the courage of the passengers and crew and the enduring importance of their sacrifice for American freedom. The program concluded with a wreath‑laying ceremony, after which the Wall of Names was opened to the public for reflection.

Flight 93 was the fourth plane hijacked on September 11, 2001. While two aircraft struck the World Trade Center and one hit the Pentagon, Flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville after passengers and crew attempted to retake control, preventing the plane from reaching a federal building in Washington, D.C.

The memorial’s observances are part of a nationwide series of tributes at 9/11 sites, including ceremonies in New York City and Washington, D.C. Across the country, communities gather to honor the victims, first responders and the brave individuals who stood up against terror.

Local residents expressed gratitude for the opportunity to pay respects close to home. “Being here reminds us of the sacrifice that protects our families and our freedoms,” said one Shanksville attendee. The memorial remains a place of education and remembrance, offering visitors a chance to learn about the events of that day and the values of courage, faith, and patriotism that continue to guide the nation.
