Serena Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon singles title winner, is returning to the tennis scene after a four-year hiatus from singles competition. The 44-year-old tennis star will face No. 53 Maya Joint in the first round on Tuesday.
Williams’ Comeback
Williams had been away from the sport since her farewell at the 2022 U.S. Open but has accepted a wild-card entry to play women’s doubles with her sister Venus, who is 46. She also accepted another wild-card entry to play singles.
Mirra Andreeva, the recent French Open winner, expressed her concerns about facing Williams, stating that she wouldn’t want to play against her due to her impressive skills.
Support from Fellow Players
Novak Djokovic called Williams’ tennis comeback “inspirational” and “epic.” Coco Gauff, the No. 7 seed at Wimbledon, said Serena and Venus were the “biggest” inspiration on her, and Aryna Sabalenka added that Williams’ return is a good thing for tennis.
