SEPTA rolls out new bus network in Philadelphia as school year begins

Philadelphia commuters saw a major shift in public transportation on Sunday as SEPTA officially launched the first phase of its New Bus Network. The overhaul, which affects 30 bus routes, coincides with the start of the school year, placing the changes at the forefront of daily routines for families and workers across the city.

Key route changes

SEPTA discontinued seven routes—35, 47M, 62, 78, 80, 89 and 106—and introduced two new lines. Route 72 now runs between the Frankford Transportation Center and Cedarbrook Plaza, while Route 76 serves neighborhoods in both North and South Philadelphia. Five existing routes were extended; notably, Route 45 now provides daily service to the Navy Yard, improving access for employees in that growing employment hub.

Rider responses

Reactions among passengers are mixed. Sandra Williams, a South Philadelphia resident, expressed satisfaction, saying, “I’m satisfied with them. SEPTA’s been alright with me.” Commuter Tosha Hays Jones praised the new service for simplifying her weekend travel, noting that she no longer needs to transfer or wait for a train and that the changes help her avoid the cost of ride‑share services.

Conversely, West Philadelphia resident Aaliyah Ferguson voiced frustration, calling the new route “ridiculous” and explaining that the loss of her former route has made commuting more difficult. She added, “Half the time the buses break down, the train breaks down. Then the buses don’t be having air. They want us to pay the money for the bus and then ya’ll taking buses we really need.”

Support for riders

To aid passengers in navigating the new system, SEPTA installed approximately 13,000 signage updates throughout the city and plans to deploy volunteer ambassadors on Tuesday mornings to assist commuters in person. The agency encourages riders to review updated schedules on its website or mobile app before traveling.

Looking ahead

Phase 2 of the New Bus Network is slated for February, promising further adjustments and extensions as SEPTA continues to refine its service based on rider feedback and operational data. The agency emphasizes its commitment to listening to the community and delivering a transit system that supports the daily needs of Philadelphia families, students, and workers.

As the city prepares for a busy school year, the success of the new bus network will likely be measured by how well it balances efficiency with the diverse commuting patterns of Philadelphia’s residents.
