Senator Murphy calls Trump immigration narrative a “fake problem”

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told Connecticut’s CT Mirror that the notion of mass immigration threatening the nation is a “fake problem” promoted by the Trump administration. He argued that immigrants, including first‑generation and illegal immigrants, commit crimes at lower rates than native‑born Americans.

ICE arrests and the call to rebuild

When asked about recent ICE arrests of parents at a Danbury bus stop, Murphy said the operation was intended to “terrorize these little kids” and used the incident to push his agenda of dismantling ICE. He said the agency should be “torn down and rebuilt” and warned that a version of ICE under Democratic control would be unacceptable.

Crime statistics and immigration policy

Murphy noted that the immigration system appears “without rules,” leaving families waiting years while others cross the border without legal claims. He cited data showing that only 0.75% of immigrant men are incarcerated compared with over 2% of U.S.-born adults, and that non‑citizens who commit crimes are often deported, preventing repeat offenses.

Manhattan Institute fellow Daniel Di Martino agreed that immigrants generally have lower imprisonment rates, though he pointed out variations by country of origin. For example, Honduran men have a 1.7% imprisonment rate, while Indian immigrants have the lowest at 0.09%, largely due to high‑skill visas.

Democratic criticism of ICE

Former assistant attorney general Theo Wold, who served under President Trump, dismissed claims that illegal immigrants commit fewer crimes, accusing Democrats of blocking reliable statistics. He described illegal immigration as a real threat to safety and the economy, recalling his father’s carpentry business in Stockton that was forced to close because of undercutting by illegal workers.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson defended ICE officers, noting that 80% of Americans support the arrest and deportation of criminal illegal aliens. The spokesperson cited dramatic increases in assaults, vehicular attacks, and death threats against ICE personnel, and affirmed that under President Trump and Secretary Kevin Mullin, illegal aliens “are not welcome in the U.S.”

Implications for Connecticut and the nation

Murphy’s remarks highlight a growing partisan divide over immigration enforcement. While Connecticut’s Democratic leadership continues to push for stricter limits on ICE, the senator’s stance underscores a broader national debate about border security, rule of law, and the impact of immigration on community safety.
