Senate Delays Vote on College Sports Bill

The U.S. Senate adjourned for summer recess without voting on the Protect College Sports Act, a bill aimed at regulating college sports. The bill, introduced by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), addresses issues such as player pay, health care, and conference alignment.

Bill Provisions

The Protect College Sports Act is a comprehensive bill that includes provisions to save women’s and Olympic sports, as well as major issues such as the transfer portal and revenue-share money for student-athletes. The bill has been met with opposition from the NCAA’s biggest and most influential conferences, the Big Ten and SEC, who ultimately signed off on a revised bill.

Sens. Cruz and Cantwell remain optimistic about the bill’s passage in September. “The Protect College Sports Act is an opportunity to preserve one of America’s greatest traditions: college sports,” Cruz said. “My colleagues and I have worked hard to end the chaos that is causing schools to cancel Olympic and women’s sports, programs to fall behind, and fans to pull out their hair in frustration.”

The Senate is scheduled to return on September 14, and the bill will be one of the first items on the agenda. If the Senate approves the bill, it will then need to be passed by the House of Representatives, where a close vote is expected. If both chambers agree to pass the bill, it will go to President Donald Trump for his signature.
