Senate Approves $70 Billion Funding for ICE and Border Patrol

The United States Senate has approved a significant funding package amounting to $70 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol. This decision, passed with a 52-47 vote, ensures that these agencies will be funded through the end of President Trump’s term. This move comes after months of stalled funding due to a partial government shutdown and debates over fatal shootings by federal agents earlier this year.

Funding Process and Challenges

Senate Republicans utilized the fast-track reconciliation process to pass the legislation without requiring Democratic support. However, the path to final approval faced challenges, particularly during a “vote-a-rama” session focused on a $1.776 billion Department of Justice settlement fund. This fund highlighted divisions within the Senate GOP, especially among members facing tough reelection campaigns in the upcoming November midterms. Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Jon Husted of Ohio, and Dan Sullivan of Alaska joined Democrats in a narrow 50-49 vote to eliminate the fund, which ultimately failed.

Additionally, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy proposed an amendment to redirect settlement payments to law enforcement officers injured during the January 6 Capitol breach, but this measure was also defeated. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche testified before a House committee, stating that the fund would not proceed, although President Trump had expressed its importance earlier in the week.

Additional Amendments and House Consideration

To secure enough votes for the bill’s passage, Republican leaders removed a $1 billion request for White House security upgrades, which included plans for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom. The House of Representatives is expected to consider the immigration funding package next week, marking a crucial step in ensuring continued support for ICE and Border Patrol operations.
