Election push tied to oil agreement
“There need to be democratic, free elections in Venezuela,” Cruz told host Chuck Todd, adding that the elections should proceed “rapidly.” He praised the oil deal, noting it could boost the U.S. economy, create jobs, and help lower gas prices over the long term. While acknowledging the importance of the oil agreement, Cruz said the timing of the elections should not be delayed in favor of the deal.
Criticism of Venezuela’s leadership
Cruz described former President Nicolás Maduro as a “Marxist” who seized power contrary to the will of Venezuelan voters. He noted that acting President Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed power after U.S. forces seized Maduro in January, was Maduro’s vice president and that the current regime is illegitimate.
Trump administration’s role
The senator said the Trump administration is “working rapidly” to both secure the oil assets and support a transition to democratic elections in Venezuela. Earlier this month, Cruz joined a bipartisan group of senators in introducing a resolution affirming U.S. support for free and fair Venezuelan elections.
Iran stance and future ambitions
During the same interview, Cruz turned to the ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran, urging the Trump administration to arm Iranian protesters to achieve “regime collapse” without deploying American troops. He referenced President Trump’s recent Truth Social post declaring “mission accomplished” in Iran and said the initial mission of degrading Iran’s military capacity was complete.
Cruz also hinted at his own political future, saying he will decide after the November midterm elections whether to pursue a 2028 presidential run. He cited the biblical Book of Ecclesiastes, noting “there is a time for every season” and that the current season is focused on the midterms.
Trump’s endorsement
President Trump recently praised Cruz in the Oval Office, calling him a “very talented” friend and suggesting he might run for president in 2028.
