As Florida students return to school, U.S. Senator Ashley Moody is pushing for federal legislation aimed at protecting children from internet-based harms. The Kids Online Safety Act, co-sponsored by Moody, recently advanced out of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

The bill would implement several mandatory requirements for digital platforms accessed by minors, including standard safety settings automatically turned on by default, provisions allowing parents and children to disable recommendation algorithms that encourage endless scrolling, and expanded reporting tools for parents to track and report harmful content or behavior.
Moody’s involvement with the bill builds on efforts from her previous role as Florida’s Attorney General. During her tenure, she called on Congress to pass similar federal safety measures and spearheaded state-level actions regarding minor safety online.
