Sen. Mitch McConnell Hospitalized

Sen. Mitch McConnell, 84, was admitted to a hospital Sunday morning. A statement from his spokesperson did not address the cause of the hospitalization or his condition, but said he was receiving “excellent care.” Senate GOP leader John Thune told CNN that McConnell “sounded good” and wants to be back on Capitol Hill.

McConnell has faced a series of health issues in recent years, including a concussion and broken ribs after a fall in March 2023. He also froze midsentence during a news conference later that year. Despite these health issues, McConnell is eager to return to work, with Thune saying he is “clearly dialed into what’s going on” and “following the stuff we’re doing this week.” Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, the No. 2 Senate Republican, also spoke with McConnell and said he is “looking forward to getting back” to work.

McConnell’s Condition

While the exact nature of McConnell’s hospitalization is not clear, his colleagues are optimistic about his recovery. Sen. John Kennedy described McConnell as “tough as a bald owl” and predicted he would recover, while Sen. Susan Collins said she expects him to be back on Capitol Hill soon.
