Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) has proposed a plan to reform the Supreme Court, including term limits and restrictions on financial gifts to justices. In an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Booker stated that the country has normalized a level of corruption in all three branches of government, which he described as a ‘cancer’ corroding the body politic.
Proposed Reforms
Booker’s plan includes two main components: stopping Supreme Court members from accepting unlimited gifts from billionaires with interests before the Court, and imposing term limits on justices to 18 years. He argued that this would ensure a fair system and prevent justices from serving well past their prime. Booker also drew a contrast between the rules governing federal judges and those governing local politicians in his home state, noting that similar behavior by local judges would result in severe consequences.
When asked about expanding the total number of justices on the Supreme Court, Booker declined to explicitly support or reject the idea, instead focusing on his proposed ethics and term limit framework as a solution to the underlying issues. He emphasized that his policy would lead to rapid changes on the bench, as many current justices have already served beyond the proposed 18-year limit.
