Selma Town Council Members Resign

Two town council members in Selma abruptly resigned on Tuesday during a meeting, with one council member saying the current council does not work well together.

During Tuesday night’s town council meeting, council members William Overby and Susan Parrish Watson both submitted their resignations. The resignations were captured on the town council’s YouTube stream.

Overby said this was the appropriate decision ‘at this time,’ and that ‘we don’t work together as a group.’ Overby did not elaborate on what that meant.

Watson said her resignation stemmed from several issues, including how the town council operated and the enforcement of town ordinances related to traffic violations. ‘Our mayor’s role is strictly defined in our charter,’ Watson said. ‘This town will continue to suffer as long as these instances of overreach are supported by council members who refuse to see it.’

Watson said she raised the concerns about the allegations about ticket quotas and other issues, such as police turnover, ‘in good faith,’ and were in the best interest of the town’s citizens.

When both Overby and Watson were asked if they were sure of their decision, both said they were sure. Mayor Pro-Tem Joseph Scarboro thanked the two council members for their service.
