Seattle’s Mayor Proposes City-Run Grocery Stores Amid High Prices

Seattle’s Mayor Katie Wilson is addressing the challenge of high grocery prices and store closures in the city. She has proposed city-run or city-backed grocery stores as a potential solution, arguing that ‘food deserts are not natural’ and blaming corporations for abandoning communities. However, this approach has been criticized by experts who believe that government intervention in food pricing leads to negative outcomes such as shortages and higher prices.

Challenges of Government Intervention

Mark Harmsworth from the Washington Policy Center argues that attempts to control food prices through government intervention have historically resulted in shortages, black markets, and inefficiencies. He points out that high food prices in Seattle are driven by economic factors such as high minimum wages, energy costs, supply chain issues, and excessive regulations. These factors increase the cost of doing business, leading grocery chains to close underperforming stores in high-cost neighborhoods.

Harmsworth emphasizes that city-run grocery stores have been tried in other locations with poor results. Government-run stores face the same cost pressures as private ones, along with additional challenges like political interference and inefficiency. He suggests that Seattle taxpayers should not be burdened with subsidizing unsustainable stores.

Free Market Solutions

Instead of government intervention, Harmsworth advocates for free-market solutions to address high food prices. He suggests cutting regulatory burdens, reforming taxes and labor policies, encouraging competition, and addressing root causes such as homelessness and crime. These measures, he argues, would create a more favorable environment for businesses and lead to more affordable food options for Seattle residents.

Harmsworth concludes that vibrant, competitive free markets, free from excessive government control, are the best way to ensure abundance at affordable prices. He urges Mayor Wilson to resist the temptation to control prices and availability through government intervention and to embrace proven free-market solutions instead.
