Sean Sweeney was introduced as the new coach of the Orlando Magic on Thursday. Sweeney said the Magic were the most thorough in their interview process, asking follow-up questions to get to the layers underneath his initial answers.
Sweeney’s Coaching Background
Sweeney comes to Orlando after spending half his life as an assistant coach. He started in the NBA as a video coordinator for the then-New Jersey Nets and has had assistant stints with the Nets, Milwaukee, Detroit, Dallas, and San Antonio.
Sweeney has worked under several notable coaches, including Gregg Popovich, the NBA’s all-time coaching wins leader. Sweeney said he was fortunate to have Popovich’s office next to his and valued the opportunity to learn from him.
The Magic struck a deal with Sweeney about three weeks ago, but the formal introduction was delayed due to Sweeney’s role as associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs and their trip to the NBA Finals.
